Orşova este un loc de savurat pe indelete. De descoperit in pas de plimbare de-a lungul Dunarii, mergand pana se termina faleza, pe marginea stancoasa si impadurita cu vegetatie salbatica, care se rupe abrupt din loc in loc in mici portiuni de plaja cu nisipul fin si amestecat cu mâl, caracteristic legendarului fluviu.

Cred ca aici, la Orsova, este cea mai frumoasa priveliste la Dunare din România si in mod sigur printre cele mai pitoresti din Europa, de admirat, de trait si apoi de postat in top list cu #BestView. Forget about Portofino. Varianta autohtona este mai spectaculoasa si am descoperit-o chiar cand am ajuns in oras, pe inserat, dar cu norocul de a mai prinde utimele culori ale asfintitului, o intreaga paleta rosiatica ce se oglindea in apa si imbratisa in lumina aceea calda, de miere, padurile de pe cele doua maluri, cel românesc si cel sârbesc.

Aflat in partea de sud-vest a tarii, micul oras are o istorie foarte veche, ce dateaza din secolul II, cand romanii au construit aici castrul Dierna. După Evul Mediu timpuriu, localitatea reapare menționată în documente în secolul al XIV-lea, unde se vorbeste despre o cetate de piatră. Mai târziu, a devenit un avanpost al austriecilor pe Dunăre, făcând parte din regiunea Banatului. Intre timp, insa, prin anul 1524, cetatea Orșova a fost cucerită de turci și stăpânită de aceștia până în anul 1688.

Din pacate, ca urmare a realizării lacului de acumulare Porțile de Fier I, vechea vatră a orașului a fost inundată în 1970, iar populația a fost strămutată pe un nou amplasament, incluzând terasele Dunării și ale Cernei și versantul de sud al Munților Almăjului, unde s-a construit, de fapt, un oraș complet nou. Asa ca centrul vechi al orasului a fost acoperit de ape, impreuna cu insula Ada Kaleh, unde locuia o comunitate turca straveche. Inca o “realizare mareata” a comunismului.

Revenind in prezent, hai mai bine la o plimbare cu barca pe Dunare, sa descoperim din comorile naturale ale locului: Cazanele Mari, Cazanele Mici, Pestera Ponicova, care are intrarea pe apa, la baza muntelui, si Chipul lui Decebal, unde veti vedea inscriptia in latina: “Decebalus Rex. Dragan Fecit”. Chipul lui Decebalus Rex are 50 de metri, este neterminat şi sculptat timp de 10 ani în stâncă,  intre 1994-2004, sub patronatul lui Iosif Constantin Dragan, care a finanțat acest proiect până la moarte. Se afla pe locul 1 în Europa în topul celor mai mari sculpturi în munte.

Veti ajunge la mici plaje nisipoase şi sălbatice, pe care cresc scaieți, maci şi albăstrele si veti afla povești locale de la barcagiu, despre orașul vechi scufundat in apă, despre insula Ada Kaleh, despre unde se mânâncă bine şi despre frumusețile de vizitat în satele din apropiere.  Daca alegeti varianta unei barci cu motor de 8-10 locuri, veti savura mai bine aceasta excursie acvatica si veti afla cate-n luna si-n stele; dureaza aproximativ 2 ore si costa 50 lei/persoana.

După ce veți coborî din barcă, veți realiza că v-ați indragostit de aceste meleaguri şi veți vrea să le explorați mai mult. Vă aşteaptă sus, pe culme, Mănăstirea Sfânta Ana, şi, la 50 km de oraş, fabuloasa Cascada Bigăr, clădită pe o poveste de iubire dintre o fată şi un băiat din Valea Almăjului, care nu s-au putut intâlni niciodată. Sa le luam pe rand.

La Mănăstirea Sfânta Ana se poate ajunge pe jos, e un urcus de vreo 40 minute prin padure, sau cu masina. Este așezată pe coama Dealului Moșului, care domină orașul Orșova. A fost ctitorită de către ziaristul interbelic Pamfil Șeicaru, care a luptat în zona Orșovei ca sublocotenent al Regimentului 17 Infanterie în Primul Război Mondial. Aici, in curtea manastirii, am vazut cei mai frumosi bujori albi, roz si salbatici, o glicina imensa, precum si maci galbeni, printre alte splendori din gradina de flori, foarte bine ingrijita de maici. Iar panorama peste oras si Dunare, ce se dezvaluie din pridvorul de lemn ce inconjoara cladirea racoros si cu liniste adanca, este absolut spendida si extrem de calmanta si binefacatoare.

Cascada Bigăr este la vreo 50 km de Orsova, in directia catre Timisoara, iar drumul are multe curbe stranse, asa ca se face aproximativ o ora pe drum. Este spectaculoasa, nu foarte inalta, insa muschiul verde de pe stanci, printre care apa izvoarelor se desparte in nenumarate suvoaie, creeaza o imagine deosebita, care atrage privirea si atentia intr-un mod magnetic si irezistibil.
Se afla in Parcul Naţional Cheile Nerei, o arie protejata unde se gasesc multe specii rare (salamandra, vipera cu corn, racul de ponoare), precum si numeroase izvoare petrifiante, care genereaza cascade si lacuri naturale. Fauna este alcatuita din mamifere (ursul brun, vulpe, râs), iar flora este specifica gruparii montane a Muntilor Banatului: nuc, alun turcesc, ghimpe, bujor salbatic banatean.
Cascada are in jur de 10 metri inaltime, iar pe conurile de stanca invelite in muschi, apa se prelinge dantelat, mangaiata de razele soarelui si pare a fi rochia miresiei lui Bigăr, flacaul din legenda.
Inca ceva: Cascada Bigăr ocupa locul I in topul “8 cascade unice in lume”.

Exact cand scriu aceste randuri, am aflat ca, din pacate, o parte din cascada tocmai s-a prabusit, datorita eroziunii exercitate de apa in stanca, care a sapat adanc in timp, precum si din cauza ca travertinul și mușchii care s-au acumulat de-a lungul anilor, au crescut în dimensiuni și greutate, iar astăzi a cedat sub propria greutate. Dar merita, in continuare, sa mergeti sa o vedeti, privelistea din “Tărâmul Regăsirii Dorului” este superba.

Venind acum pentru prima data la Orsova, am ales sa stau intr-un loc aparte, in Casa Briza, o vila aflata exact pe malul apei si cu cea mai frumoasa priveliste la Dunare, amenajata in stil boho-chic, cozy dar in acelasi timp practic, de talentata mea prietena Adela Pârvu si echipa sa. Casa este situată între pădure și Dunăre, așa că pentru Adela & team, povestea interiorului a însemnat pădure pe malul fluviului și au tratat camerele, fiecare altfel, în culori și cu accente decorative care să vorbească despre o vacanță în acest mediu. De aici și nuanțele diferite de albastru, verde, turcoaz și texturile de lemn.

Am privit spectacolul rasaritului soarelui pe ponton si am savurat cafeaua de dimineata in gradina de trandafiri, ingrijita impecabil, cu drag si pasiune, de proprietar. La cafea, intr-una din dimineti, l-am avut companion pe Gică, motanul vagabond, care m-a tolerat, moțăind la soare, pana cand am inceput sa-i fac poze. Apusul a fost celebrat la rece, cu un vin rozé sec, la povesti cu oameni vechi si noi. Pentru ca escapada asta n-a fost de umblat prea mult incoace si-ncolo, ci mai degraba pentru a simti micul oraş cochet, aşezat în trepte de-a lungul Dunării, care-ți desfată ochii cu cea mai frumoasă privelişte panoramica, ce culminează la răsărit şi apus, când cerul şi apa se unesc în toate culorile curcubeului.

De la Bucureşti pană la Orşova sunt 375 km, pe care teoretic, îi parcurgi in 5 ore. Practic, dacă pleci din Bucureşti vinerea la ora 13, ajungi in defileul Dunării, la destinație, la lăsarea întunericului intr-o zi de vară, adică pe la 21.30,  dupa 8 ore şi jumătate de condus. E nevoie de o maşină bună, care să reziste la drum lung, în care să te simți bine, stabilă, dar sprintenă, de aceea, noul Land Rover Discovery a fost un partener perfect pentru acest gen de călătorie. In incheiere, sper ca pana data viitoare cand voi reveni in Orsova sa apara niste restaurante sau mici bistrouri in care sa gasesc feluri locale banatene, bine gatite, cu bucatari care stiu sa aprecieze savoarea mancarii, abordand cu pricepere inclusiv sortimentele de peşte autohtone. Ah, si niste cafenele cochete, unde  cafeaua sa fie pe masura splendorii peisajului. Caci da, mancarea este intotdeauna o componenta esentiala a unei experiente locale complete si a unei escapade turistice reusite.

Orsova is a place to enjoy leisurely. To be discovered while walking along the Danube, going until the cliff ends, on the rocky edge and forested with wild vegetation, which breaks steeply from place to place in small portions of beach with fine sand and mixed with mud, characteristic of the legendary river.
I think that here, in Orsova, is the most beautiful view of the Danube in Romania and certainly among the most picturesque in Europe, to be admired, lived and then posted in the top list with #BestView. Forget about Portofino. The local variant is more spectacular and I discovered it right when I arrived in the city, in the evening, but with the luck of catching the last colors of the sunset, a whole reddish palette that reflected in the water and embraced in that warm, honey light, the forests on the two banks, the Romanian and the Serbian.

Located in the southwestern part of the country, the small town has a very old history, dating back to the second century, when the Romans built the Dierna camp here. After the early Middle Ages, the town reappears mentioned in documents in the fourteenth century, where there is talk of a stone fortress. Later, it became an Austrian outpost on the Danube, part of the Banat region. Meanwhile, however, in 1524, the fortress of Orsova was conquered by the Turks and ruled by them until 1688.

Unfortunately, as a result of the construction of the Iron Gates I reservoir, the old hearth of the city was flooded in 1970, and the population was relocated to a new location, including the Danube and Cerna terraces and the southern slope of the Almaj Mountains, where a completely new city was actually built. So the old city center was covered in water, along with the island of Ada Kaleh, where an ancient Turkish community lived. Another “great achievement” of communism.

Returning to the present, let’s take a boat trip on the Danube, to discover the natural treasures of the place: Cazanele Mari, Cazanele Mici, Ponicova Cave, which has the entrance on the water, at the base of the mountain, and the Face of Decebal, where you will see inscription in Latin: “Decebalus Rex. Dragan Fecit ”. The face of Decebalus Rex is 50 meters long, it is unfinished and sculpted for 10 years in the rock, between 1994-2004, under the patronage of Iosif Constantin Dragan, who financed this project until his death. It ranks 1st in Europe in the top of the largest sculptures in the mountains.

You will reach small sandy and wild beaches, where twigs, poppies and blues grow and you will find local stories from the boat, about the old town submerged in water, about the island of Ada Kaleh, about where to eat well and about the beauties to visit in the nearby villages. If you choose the variant of a boat with an engine of 8-10 seats, you will enjoy this water trip better and you will find out in the moon and in the stars; lasts about 2 hours and costs 50 lei / person.

After you get off the boat, you will realize that you have fallen in love with these lands and you will want to explore them more. The Sfânta Ana Monastery is waiting for you upstairs, and, 50 km from the city, the fabulous Bigăr Waterfall, built on a love story between a girl and a boy from Valea Almăjului, who could never meet. Let’s take them one at a time.

The Sfânta Ana Monastery can be reached on foot, it is a climb of about 40 minutes through the forest, or by car. It is located on the ridge of Santa’s Hill, which dominates the city of Orșova. It was founded by the interwar journalist Pamfil Șeicaru, who fought in the Orșova area as a lieutenant of the 17th Infantry Regiment in the First World War. Here, in the courtyard of the monastery, I saw the most beautiful white, pink and wild peonies, a huge wisteria, as well as yellow poppies, among other splendors from the flower garden, very well cared for by the nuns. And the panorama over the city and the Danube, which is revealed from the wooden porch that surrounds the building cool and with deep silence, is absolutely splendid and extremely calming and beneficent.

Bigăr Waterfall is about 50 km from Orsova, in the direction of Timisoara, and the road has many tight curves, so it takes about an hour on the road. It is spectacular, not very high, but the green moss on the rocks, among which the spring water splits into countless streams, creates a special image, which attracts the eye and attention in a magnetic and irresistible way.
It is located in Cheile Nerei National Park, a protected area where there are many rare species (salamander, horned viper, crayfish), as well as numerous petrifying springs, which generate waterfalls and lakes natural. The fauna is made up of mammals (brown bear, fox, lynx), and the flora is specific to the mountain group of the Banat Mountains: walnut, Turkish hazelnut, thorns, wild Banat peony.
The waterfall is about 10 meters high, and on the rock cones wrapped in moss, the water drips lacy, caressed by the sun’s rays and seems to be the dress of Bigăr’s bride, the young man from the legend. One more thing: Bigăr Waterfall ranks first in the top “8 unique waterfalls in the world”.

Just as I write these lines, I have learned that, unfortunately, part of the waterfall has just collapsed, due to the erosion of water in the rock, which has dug deep over time, and because the travertine and muscles that have accumulated over the years, they have increased in size and weight, and today it has given way under its own weight. But it is still worth going to see it, the view from the “Land of Finding Longing” is beautiful.

Coming now for the first time to Orsova, I chose to stay in a special place, in Casa Briza, a villa located right on the waterfront and with the most beautiful view of the Danube, arranged in boho-chic style, cozy but at the same time practical, by my talented friend Adela Pârvu and her team. The house is located between the forest and the Danube, so for Adela & team, the story of the interior meant forest on the river bank and they treated the rooms, each differently, in colors and with decorative accents that speak of a holiday in this environment. Hence the different shades of blue, green, turquoise and wood textures.

I watched the sunrise show on the pontoon and enjoyed my morning coffee in the rose garden, impeccably cared with love and passion, by the owner. At coffee, one morning, I had Gica, the stray cat, as my companion, who tolerated me, dozing in the sun, until I started taking pictures of him. The sunset was celebrated in the cold, with a dry rosé wine, with stories with old and new people. Because this getaway was not too much to walk back and forth, but rather to feel the small chic town, perched on steps along the Danube, which delights your eyes with the most beautiful panoramic view, culminating in the east. and sunset, when the sky and the water unite in all the colors of the rainbow.

From Bucharest to Orşova is 375 km, which theoretically, you cover in 5 hours. Basically, if you leave Bucharest on Friday at 1 pm, you arrive at the Danube gorge, at your destination, at dusk on a summer day, that is, at 9.30 pm, after 8 and a half hours of driving. You need a good car that can withstand the long road, in which you feel good, stable, but agile, that’s why the new Land Rover Discovery was a perfect partner for this kind of trip. Ah, and some chic cafes, where the coffee is in line with the splendor of the landscape. Because yes, food is always an essential component of a complete local experience.
